Agriculture in Australia

About Agriculture in Australia:

About two-thirds of Australia's land is used for farming and 90% of the farmland is used for grazing pastures that are in the ari and semi-arid zones. From 1901 to 2009 there has been a large decrease related to the income from wool, and the people employed in agriculture, from 14 per cent to 3 per cent. At the same time, there has been an increase in the head of cattle and the variety of profitable agricultural export industries. Most of Australia's agricultural products continue to be exported and farmers supply about 93 per cent of Australia's food. As of 2012, the highest value of production was in cattle, wheat, dairy, vegetables, fruit, nuts, lamb meat and wool. Overall Australia remains a net exporter of food.

 Food Exported 2010-2011
  •  67 % of Australia's wheat production
  • 70 % of sugar production
  •  57 % of the nation's barley production
  •  93 % of Australia's domestic food supply

It was in 1900, that the beef and cattle industry began to bloom and take part in Australia's agriculture, in addition to vegetables, fruits, and grain. Today, the Australian  Agricultural Company remains the largest beef cattle company in Australia.

" The Golden Fleece" aka Wool  industry reached its between 1950-1951 with the highest price willing to be paid was equal to $37 per kilogram in today's economy. In 1999-2000, the production of wool fell to 35% due to new growth of synthetic fibers. Today, Australia still remain producing more than a quarter of the world's wool.

Difficulties in Agriculture:

The two main challenges for farmers is fresh water availability and drought management. The location of wells, dams, and the sinking of bores are part of the necessary requirements for farming in the low rainfall areas. Irrigation systems are also an important aspect of farming in making the land capable of farming upon. New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia, and all of the
Australian Capital Territory is where the most irrigated land

is located. The loss of grassland has contributed to a lack
of biodiversity within. The final issue is access to fresh water required by
farmers for their grazing stock and crops due to human engineering in regulating the flow of rivers.

Human Development

What is human development?

The concept of human development was introduced to the world by an economist named Mahbub UI Haq. Mahbub UI Haq also includes Amartya Sen's work on what humans are capable of doing in this world. What human development actually entails, however, is improving and broadening the richness of life as opposed to the economy. Human development is all about bettering the lives of the people in this world through opportunities and the choices that they have available to them.
The way that human development is measured is through Human Development Index (HDI). HDI is an unweighted average of a nation's longevity, education, and income and is widely accepted in development discourse.

Where does Australia stand in the world?

Compared to the rest of the world, Australia is ranked second, right below Norway, for having the highest level of human development. While Australia has many indicators that allow it to be ranked second in the world, the 3 most important indicators that I find to contribute to this ranking are: 1.Health
2. Education
3. Employment and Vulnerability.
Below you will see the statistics for each of these indicators.
